I Can’t Stop Thinking about Liverpool Says Lionel Messi in His First Interview in Five Years

Newly Crowned European Golden Boot winner Lionel Messi has admitted that he can’t stop thinking about the Liverpool Debacle.

It would be recalled that Barcelona gave up a three-goal advantage to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team at Anfield. This defeat deprived Barcelona of the opportunity to grace its first champion’s league final in about four years.

The source of the embarrassment that most Barcelona fans would want to forget in a hurry is not just that they lost but that they lost in a rather disgraceful manner. The first leg of the Semifinal encounter between Barcelona and Liverpool had ended 3:0 in favor of Barcelona at the Camp Nou. However, in a manner reminiscent of the previous season’s quarterfinal loss to Roma, Barcelona threw the 3 goal advantage away as they lost 4 nil to Liverpool in the return leg at Anfield.

The result was met with a lot of rage from all stakeholders. It is on record that Ernesto Valverde was also in charge when Barca faced Roma a year ago.

Even with the negatives cloud that has hovered over the Camp Nou since the disastrous exit from the Champions League, Lionel Messi still shows no sign of lowering his standards. He scored a brace in the recent encounter with Eiber thus taking his goal tally in the league to 36 putting him in good stead for the European Golden Boot. However, the Golden Boot for the sixth time in total and third straight time does not seem to have assuaged the pains of Messi.

In a recent interview with reports, Messi said: “Honestly, I am not even thinking about the European Golden Shoe.”

When asked by reporters he stated that the Golden show wasn’t on his head as he considered the loss to Liverpool as a very big blow. He went on further to state that he wasn’t thinking about personal accomplishments and that his focus was on the Copa final and taking home another trophy.

He went on further to counter claims attributed to him where it was claimed at the beginning of the season that he would bring the champion’s league to the Camp Nou. These were the words that were used to mock him after the loss to Liverpool.

Messi was quoted as saying “I did not promise to bring that beautiful and desired cup back.”

He stated clearly that what he promised was to do all he could to bring the cup back, he went on to say he and his teammates didn’t do that and that they were sorry for that.

There is still reason to be hopeful

Even with Champions league dream down the drain, Barcelona still has a chance of ending the season on a high with a double.  Standing in their way, however, is a certain Valencia side that secured Champions League football.

It all but looks like Messi’s Barca side do not look like repeating the same mistakes that saw them throw away the Champions League trophy at Anfield.
